Scientists Engineer Spinach Leaves to Detect Explosives

Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have ingrained carbon nanotubes inside spinach leaves, turning the leaves into sensing units which are able to communicate with humans. This particular application is amongst the 1st demos of plant nanobionics, an area of research that rig electronic systems inside living plants.

“The goal of plant nanobionics is to install nanoparticles into the plant in order to give it non-native functionalities,” MIT Carbon P. Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering Michael Strano explained.

In this particular instance, the carbon nanotubes inserted in plants were fabricated to sense nitroaromatics, chemical compounds commonly used in bombs, present within groundwater. Upon detection, the leaves of the spinach plant produce a fluorescent signal which an infrared camera connected to a smartphone-sized computer examines. The computing device then wirelessly delivers an e-mail to alert about the chemicals.

Plant Nanobionics

Because they naturally take in extensive information from their surroundings, plants are the perfect choice for environmental monitoring. “Plants are excellent analytical chemists,” Stano remarked, “They have an extensive root network inside the ground, are continuously sampling groundwater, and have a method to self-power the transport of that ground water up into the leaves.”

Plant nanobionics was first demonstrated by Strano and his team a couple of years ago when these experts enhanced plants’ photosynthesis capability with nanoparticles so that they could sense the combustion pollutant nitric oxide. The research team has also utilized carbon nanotube implants in leaves in order to sense more than explosives: they have engineered plants that can detect dopamine, hydrogen peroxide, and the nerve agent, sarin – which was used in the deadly attacks recently inside Syria.

The researchers also plan to utilize this technology to combat drought and improve crop yields by optimizing soil quality. “These sensors give real-time data from the plant. It is almost like having the plant speak to us regarding the environment they operate in,” graduate student and scientist Min Hao Wong informed MIT News. “When it comes to precision agriculture, possessing such info can directly influence yield and margins.”

DIY - How To: Construct a Simple Trebuchet in less than $10

This DIY project uses lower than $10 worth of supplies, mostly household items, requires no tools more sophisticated than a pair of scissors, and could be built in a couple of hours at max. It can fire small paper missiles etc. Bill Livolsi, from makerzine.com, constructed his first prototype in two hours. It didn’t work, so he constructed another one. The video above showcases his third attempt for the benefit of the viewers. Although there is a lot of room for improvement in this simple design, he believes it will get his point across: "you can make something from, effectively, nothing."

A bit of history

Trebuchets, a kind of siege weapons, that we mostly see (in movies?) are "counterweight trebuchet", which uses a counterweight to swing its arm. They first appeared in the 12th century AD in both Muslim and Christian lands around the Mediterranean and made its way to China via Mongol conquests in the 13th century. The first trebuchets actually were 'traction trebuchet' thought to be invented by the Chinese in the 4th century AD. Instead of a counterweight to fire the projectile, the traction trebuchet had many ropes which people pulled together to swing the arm!

The promise of utilizing DNA as storage means you may possibly save every photograph you’ve ever taken, your complete songs and audio books library, and all 236 episodes of Friends in a tiny molecule invisible to the naked eye—with plenty of room still to spare.

However what if you might be able to preserve all that digital data on you at all times, even embedded in your skin? George Church, a geneticist at Harvard University and his team think it might be attainable at some point in the future.

They have used the gene-editing system CRISPR to insert a short animated picture, or GIF, into the genomes of living Escherichia coli (E-coli) bacteria. The researchers converted the individual pixels of every picture into nucleotides, the basic structural unit of DNA.

They delivered the GIF into the living microorganism in the form of 5 frames: pictures of a galloping horse and rider, taken by Eadweard Muybridge, an English photographer who produced the 1st stop-motion video in the 1870s. The scientists were then able to retrieve the information by sequencing the bacterial DNA. They reconstructed the animation with 90% accuracy by studying the pixel nucleotide code.


The strategy, detailed in Nature, is specific to bacteria, however, Yaniv Erlich, a biologist and a computer scientist at Columbia University who was not involved in this research, says it represents a scalable method to host data in living cells that might ultimately be used in human cells.

The modern world is increasingly producing huge amounts of digital information, and scientists see DNA as a compact and enduring method of storing that data. After all, DNA from thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years in the past can still be extracted and sequenced in a lab.

To date, a lot of the research into utilizing DNA for storage has involved synthetic DNA made by researchers in the lab. And this GIF—only 26 x 36 pixels in dimension—represents a comparatively small quantity of data in comparison with what scientists have thus far been able to encode into synthetic DNA. It is tougher to add data into living cells than synthesised DNA, because living cells are continuously moving, dividing, changing, and dying off.

Erlich says one advantage of hosting information in living cells like bacteria is better safety. For instance, some bacteria still thrive after radiation exposure, extremely high temperatures or even nuclear explosions.

Seth Shipman, a scientist involved in Church’s lab at Harvard who led the research, says that apart from just storing data, he wishes to make use of the technique to make “living sensors” that could one day record what is going on inside a cell or around it.

Although this technique won’t be used anytime soon to store massive amounts of data into your body, it might prove to be a precious research instrument. One potential use could be to record the molecular events that drive the evolution of cell types, such as the formation of neurones throughout brain development.
“What we really wish to make are cells that encode biological or environmental information about what’s happening inside them and around them,” Shipman says.

Shipman says you could deposit these bacterial hard drives in the body or anywhere on the planet, record something you might be interested in, gather the bacteria, and sequence the DNA to see what info has been picked up along the way.

A miniature, low-cost computer that may encourage kids to learn to program was the concept of a small team of academics and scientists. Launched in 2012, Raspberry Pi has achieved great feats in the last 5 years since it has been on sale. More than 14 million units of the miniature-PC have been sold. Recently, it partnered with Google to add artificial intelligence, and Microsoft even made its AI work on the Raspberry Pi which will help people build smarter gadgets.

Now, the crew behind the Pi has been awarded the United Kingdom's prime engineering prize. CEO Eben Upton and Pi employees were given the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award at a ceremony held on Thursday night in London.

The Pi crew beat two other finalists, radiotherapy pioneers Vision RT and AI cyber-security firm Darktrace, to win the prize. Previous winners of the innovation award, which has been run since 1969, include Blatchford, the creators of an intelligent prosthetic limb; the crew at Microsoft in Cambridge that developed the Kinect motion sensor; the creators of the computerised tomography (CT) scanner; Jaguar Land Rover; and IBM.

The Raspberry Pi team was given the award because of the role it played in helping to re-invent home computing. "The Raspberry Pi crew has achieved something that mainstream multi-national computer corporations and leading processing chip makers not only failed to do but also failed even to identify a need for," award judge Dr Frances Saunders stated.

Since the device was launched, there have been many iterations sold. The latest was Raspberry Pi Zero, which costs just $5 (and hence got the title of world's cheapest computer), has a 1Ghz processor plus 512MB RAM. The first generation had a slower processor, 256MB RAM, and was bigger and heavier. The Pi organisation is split into two components: a charitable foundation and a trading firm.

"It will be a validation of the fact that we have constructed something greater than we ever envisaged. It will also be recognition of the extraordinary community we have built around the Pi." - CEO Upton, while talking to BBC before the award.

What's extraordinary is just how successful it has turned out to be in the industry, where it is discovering a place in all types of applications, from smart signage systems to robotics. This area now accounts for almost half of all Raspberry Pi sales. Last week, it emerged that Intel had quietly cancelled 3 devices, including its Galileo (pictured below), geared toward competing with Raspberry Pi.

Despite all its financial success, the Raspberry Pi's core mission remains education. It has recently merged with CoderDojo, making it the biggest international coding teaching organisation.

In the early days, it appeared that the device appealed more to middle-aged nostalgic hobbyists than to kids, who found it hard to get to grips with something that didn't match their concept of a PC.

Now, with plentiful funds at their disposal and recognition of their engineering expertise, the Raspberry Pi organisation can step up their drive to transform attitudes towards computing.
